Who Am I, and Why Should You Trust Me with Your Art?
I'm Mike Van Orden. Comic artist, art teacher, and someone who drinks way too much coffee. I've worked with big comic companies, helped thousands of students, and turned my love of drawing into a business called Comic Art Mastery.
But it wasn't always like this.
I didn't go to fancy art school. I didn't have family members in the comic business. And I definitely didn't wake up one day knowing how to draw cool poses.
I was just a guy in San Diego, California with big dreams, a dull pencil, and a sketchbook full of bad drawings.

Why I Know You Can Break Through (No Matter How Stuck You Feel Right Now)
Let me tell you about the worst day of my comic art career.
Picture this: San Diego Comic-Con. Me, standing in line with my little portfolio, sweating through my shirt, waiting to show my work to a Marvel editor.
I'd been grinding for months. Drawing every spare second. Hitting conventions. Doing everything "right."
The editor flips through my pages for maybe ten seconds. Then tosses them back at me without a word and moves on to the next guy.

Right when I was ready to quit, something crazy happened.
I bumped into one of my artistic heroes as I was leaving the convention. Instead of brushing me off like everyone else, he actually looked at my work. Really looked.
"You've got something here," he said. "But you're doing it all wrong."
That conversation changed everything.
He became my mentor. Showed me what I was missing. Taught me how to actually practice with purpose instead of just putting in hours.
For the first time, I could see real improvement in my work.
Then Everything Fell Apart
Just when I was hitting my stride, my mentor passed. Suddenly. Without warning.
The guy who believed in me when nobody else did was just... gone.
I completely lost it.
I stopped drawing. Tossed all of my art supplies in a storage bin. Convinced myself that maybe everyone else was right and I just wasn't cut out for this.
I took a soul-crushing office job and tried to forget the whole thing.
The Breaking Point
A few long years later, I was dying inside.
Sitting in my cubicle, watching other artists on Instagram doing what I'd given up on, I realized something: I'd rather fail trying than succeed at something I hated.
So I did something insane. I quit my job, sold everything, and moved to another country with nothing but my art supplies and a promise to myself that I'd give this dream everything I had.
No backup plan. No safety net. Just me, my pencils, and a whole lot of desperation.
The Email That Changed Everything
After months of grinding 12+ hours a day, posting daily, and treating my art like my life depended on it (because it did), I got an email that gave me chills.
A major publisher wanted to hire me. Not just any publisher, but the company working on a tribute book for my late mentor.
