So who am I and how can I help You? 

 

I'm Mike Van Orden, a Professional Comic Book Artist, Art Instructor and Coach. I've been drawing comic art professionally for well over a decade, and I've worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. I've also taught thousands of students how to improve their art and advance toward their Artistic goals.

 Why do I believe that you can make great progress in your art, no matter where you are right now?

 

 

Let me tell you a little bit more about my story. 

It wasn't so long ago, I was living in San Diego, California and working odd jobs to make ends meet. My dream was to break into the world of comics, but I was stuck in a cycle of portfolio reviews and conventions that didn't seem to get me anywhere. It was a challenging time, filled with uncertainty and self-doubt. All I wanted to do was break into the industry, but it didn't seem like it was in the cards for me. 
 

I had to develop thick skin.

I desperately tried to get noticed in the competitive comic industry. Success seemed distant and elusive. I went to conventions, hoping to get the attention of publishers, but my art was often met with rejection. One guy even threw my samples into the trash right in front of me. It was disheartening, and I felt like I was running in circles, not making any progress.
 

Then, something incredible happened.

I crossed paths with a very popular and influential comic artist who would become my mentor. He actually saw potential in me when no one else did. He was the only one who gave me a chance and his guidance and support were like a lifeline. I soon started to see a glimmer of hope in my artistic journey. 
 

Life can change at any moment. 

Tragically, my mentor passed away not long after that experience, leaving a void in my life. I went through a dark period, personally and artistically. I soon found myself working a 9-5 job, feeling like I had abandoned my dreams. But deep down, I knew I couldn't give up on my passion.
 

I had to dig deep or risk losing it all.

A few years later, I finally made the decision to break free from the cubicle corporate grind and travel the world. It was during this time, I rediscovered my passion for drawing and committed to it every single day. Starting from nothing more than a childhood dream, I relentlessly pursued my artistic goals. I made a commitment to it like never before.
 

It was all or nothing!

I treated my art like a job, posting my creations on social media daily. I would sometimes put in 10-12 hours of pure drawing. Within a few months, an editor from a major comic publisher reached out to me. He offered me an opportunity to contribute to a book honoring the legacy of my late mentor. It was a surreal moment that marked a turning point in my career.
